He has crashed a few planes prior so let’s collectively agree he is qualified!

Somehow I doubt that implying that people are stupid will convince them to adopt your point of view.

No, it isn’t. “Rule of experts” has always been fraught with the risk that experts are not, actually, very expert at anything but claiming expertise, and the viability of nonspecific political expertise is very much in question. Also, the New Yorker sniffs its own farts.

“Everybody who disagrees with me is stupid” is an evergreen salve for discomfort. A toxic one, but evergreen.

I would agree in the sense that that most government officials didn’t go to school for government. There isn’t really a “politician” degree.

Just to play devil’s advocate (I happen to agree with the cartoon):

Flying civilian aircraft is a well-established profession with standardised equipment and fed by a fixed, rigid education system. Pilots are regulated and maintain strict certification standards throughout their careers. The reason is simple—a complex job with people’s lives in your hands mandates eliminating as many operational variables as possible.

There is no POTUS Training Institute, License or Certification. Or even a defined prerequisite career path.

I’d rather risk someone not being an expert than be without doubt that they are not a expert.

True. One of the flaws of (rare) actual expertise, can, however, be that the expertise is used to *justify* ideology rather than to guide it. As an example, some of (IIRC) Steven Chu’s odd ideas regarding transportation.

Political science?

The analogy doesn’t really work because the people who have the expertise to run the government on a daily basis are not the elected politicians but the hired or appointed bureaucrats. The elected office holders very often have little or no specific training before taking office. Our outgoing president is one example.

Really, our government was not originally envisioned as being run by career politicians.

PoliSci degrees lead to more analytical and support jobs than actual political offices. Most politicians have law degrees.

There aren’t even official requirements beyond age and citizenship either. So every American citizen over 35 is officially qualified to be the President.

Perry did have a record 14 years as governor of Texas, during which time the state experienced a signification boom in oil, gas, and wind energy production.

He may not be a Nobel laureate, but he’s also not an idiot.

Career politicians are a necessary evil with how large the country is. Running anything larger than a city part-time just doesn’t work. You need to devote 100% of you time when your government is handling millions of people.

Problem with this is our politics aren’t experts at anything but taking money from special interests and making themselves more powerful. The political class is the problem they are the less then 1%ers.

They dont need to do it for a life time though. They can do it full time for 4-8 years then it’s time to get out.

What Tahoe said. A person should pay attention to the job they are doing while they are doing it. That doesn’t mean they need to make a career out of it.

Presumably you should have some experience before you seek office. That doesn’t appear to be the norm.
